Max Coates (Scorton) has confirmed a drive with multiple title-winning squad Team Pyro for the 2018 Renault UK Clio Cup.

The North Yorkshireman has raced in the series for the last two years, finishing third in his debut season with an emotional maiden race victory at his home circuit of Croft. Two wins followed in 2017 along with fourth in the championship.

With continued sponsorship from Harron Homes, Primex Plastics and PLASgran Recycling, the BRDC Rising Star and MSA Academy Squad member enters 2018 with a clear goal.

Coates commented: “I’m really pleased to be racing with Team Pyro in the Renault UK Clio Cup, Mark Hunt runs a great team and their successes, eight championship victories in the last ten seasons, confirms that. The aim is simple, win the championship. Whilst I’ve got an end goal I want to take each session and each round as it comes and focus on being the best I can every time I’m in the car.”

He continued: “Harron Homes, Primex Plastics and PLASgran Recycling are continuing their partnerships which is testament to the commercial platform the UK Clio Cup offers. As a driver you can’t beat racing on the BTCC weekends in front of massive crowds and being able to offer significant TV exposure to my partners is a massive benefit, as is Renault Sport’s hospitality. I’m looking forward to unveiling my new livery at the championship media day (Silverstone – 15 th March) where I’ll get my first drive in a Pyro car.”

Coates will join Daniel Rowbottom, Bradley Burns and Zak Fulk in the Leicester-based Pyro Team for 2018 who aim to retain their entrants and drivers titles. Pyro boss Mark Hunt said: “Max is a real coup for our team – he has been among the stand-out acts these past two seasons and adds real strength to our line-up as we aim to defend our Entrants Trophy crown. I am also confident he will be right in the fight for the drivers’ title, too.”

Renault Sport’s UK Motorsport Championship Manager Will Fewkes added: “Max becomes the latest high-profile name to join the UK Clio Cup grid for 2018 which is shaping up to be even more competitive than 2017’s. I have no doubt Max will put together a very strong title bid with Pyro and it will be interesting to see just how far he and Pyro’s other drivers can push one other…”
